Taormina is an Italian cultural and historical city on the eastern coast of Sicily (Sicilia) in the province of Messina. It is located on the terrace of Mount Tauro (Monte Tauro) at an altitude of 206 meters above sea level with spectacular views of Mount Etna. Taormina has inspired many artists, aristocrats and writers with its scenic beauty.

Taormina is a medieval city which has perfectly preserved magnificent landmarks. The main landmark of the city is the Greek Theatre of the 3rd century BC. Its diameter is 109 meters theater and it seats up to ten thousand spectators. The theater was built by Greeks, but in the first century BC Romans rebuilt it and re-equipped it for gladiator fights. Now it holds the summer festival of arts (Taormina Arte), which is attended by people from around the world, as well as Taormina Film Festival which showcases masterpieces of the world cinema.

Odeon is another attraction of the city, which is a small indoor theater that seats up to 200 spectators. The theater was built during Octavian Augustus and it was used for various events.

In the town you will also find ruins of an ancient pool and Antique theatre - naumahiya, which hosted gladiator naval battles.

You can admire stunning views from the square of the Ninth of April. This is the biggest piazza in Taormina with great restaurants, bars, cafes and many shops. There is also a clock tower (Torre dell'Orogio) of the 12th century. The tower was completely destroyed by the French in 1676. Today the tower is just a copy of the first tower built by the city's residents in 1679.

The city has many ancient churches. In the center of the city there is the Cathedral of San Nicolò (Dom San Nicolò) of the 15th century. The Cathedral features the works of the painters Antonèllo de Saliba and Antonio Giuffre. In front of the cathedral there is a beautiful fountain of white marble built in 1635 in Baroque style. This fountain is a true work of art.

Church of St. Augustine (San Agostino) was built in the fifteenth century as a gratitude for the liberation of the city of Taormina from a terrible plague. Now the building is a library.

There are other important churches in the city: the Church of St. Pancras (Chiesa di San Pancrazio) of the 16th century, the Church of Our Lady in the rock (Madonna della Rocca) from 1648, the Church of San Giuseppe (Chiesa di San Giuseppe) of the 17th century.

The city also has very interesting ancient buildings. Among them, the Palazzo Corvaja that once served as an ancient forum. The palace is a blend of the Byzantine, Arab and Norman styles. The palace was damaged during the World War II, but in 1960 it was restored and a new wing was built which today houses the offices of the tourist information bureau.

We also recommend you visiting the palace of the Duke of Santo Stefano (Palazzo Duca di Santo Stefano) of the 14th century, built in the Sicilian-Romanesque and Gothic styles, the Palazzo Old Monastery (Palazzo Badia Vecchia) of the 14th century, the Palazzo Champoli of the 13th century.

A tour to the volcano Etna - the largest active volcano in Italy, will be very interesting. Amazingly, the height of the volcano changes after eruptions. Now, for example, the volcano is 21.5 meters lower than it was in 1865.

Also worth a visit the National Park of Alcantara (Parco Naturale dell'Alcantara) which is considered a natural reserve of Sicily. The Alcantara River is the only river in Sicily that does not dry up in the summer.
