Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso al Mare is the largest town of the "five lands" of Cinque Terre – a famous Ligurian protected area in Italy. Monterosso al Mare is located in a valley, in the north-western part of that area and is very different from the other four towns. The city is more lively and larger in size. It differs from its neighbors by having many cultural and architectural landmarks and a large sandy beach.
For the first time Monterosso al Mare was mentioned in the 11th century. Now the city has the size of 11 square kilometers and a population of nearly 2,000 residents.
The town consists of old and new parts that are separated by the Cappuccini cliff going into the sea, on which stands the ancient castle of Aurora. These two parts, the old and the new, are connected by a long tunnel of more than 50 meters. In the old part of the city there are several ancient churches, chapels and a medieval monastery of the Cappuccinis. You should definitely visit the Parish church of St. Michael of the 12th century that is famous for its magnificent murals and beautiful statues, the Consolation Church (Signora della Consolazione) of the 15th century, the Church of San Giorgio with the paintings of the 17th century and the Piani church. Of particular interest is the church of St. Francis (Chiesa di San Francesco) with its impressive art collection. One of the paintings - the Crucifixion - is considered to be the work of the painter Van Dyck.
At one point the city had 13 towers of St. Christopher rising on the hill. Only three of them survived and they are all the ruins of a medieval fortress. The fortress with the towers were built by the Genoese in the 16th century in order to protect from the raids of the Saracens. The tower Aurora which is translated as "dawn", has long been a symbol of Monterosso al Mare.
Currently, the tower Aurora is private property, but you can climb it if you want to see the ruins of the castle. Not far from the tower there is a winery where you can taste local wines.
The highlight of Monterosso al Mare is a 14-meter statue of Neptune with a flat area on his shoulders which was once used as a stage. This work of the sculptor Arrigo Minerbi weighs 1,700 tons and was placed on the cliff in 1910. The statue got badly damaged during the World War II and most recently local authorities have been engaged in its restoration.
Of the five towns of the Cinque Terre only Monterosso al Mare has sandy beaches. Fegina is the most comfortable and the most famous beach in town. This is a paid beach where for a small fee you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas. Above the beach there is the promenade where you can take a nice walk, especially in the evenings. Near the beach there is a large football field where you can play some ball.
In the old town there is a smaller, free beach, but it is close to the harbor and swimming there is not recommended.
The famous Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro) begins in Monterosso al Mare. It goes over the sea through all of the towns of the Cinque Terre.
The climate in Monterosso al Mare is mild Mediterranean. Apennines and the Alps protect the town from cold winds.
In this small town there about 50 hotels, all of which offer excellent amenities, and the level of service, as elsewhere, depends on the star level of the hotel. Some hotels offer playgrounds for children.
