Pisa

Pisa is a city that is primarily associated with the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This, however, is not very reasonable, as the city of Pisa has many other attractions besides the famous bell tower standing at an angle, which, of course, is a masterpiece of architecture.

The best way to discover Pisa is to walk through the city on foot. This way you can admire all of its surroundings, the beautiful scenery and monuments of art. From the train station to the Field of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli) you can get on foot in about half an hour. During this time, you can experience the true spirit of Pisa: visit local souvenir shops, shops of famous brands, have lunch in a cozy restaurant or stroll the alleys and parks. Another plus of walking on foot - you do not have to look for a parking space, which, by the way, is very difficult to find in Pisa.

The most important rule that you need to know as a tourist – do not have a meal near the Leaning Tower. In comparison to other restaurants of Pisa a meal here will cost you much more, and often it might not be even good. Yet if you take the trouble to walk a few minutes, you can enjoy very good food and save some money. Lots of interesting cafes with an amazing Italian cuisine you will find in a small square Piazza delle Vetovagle, next to the produce market. Via San Martino is also famous for good restaurants with great atmosphere and interesting dishes.

The main attractions of this wonderful city are located at Prato de Miracoli, which means "Field of Miracles". The most famous of them is, of course, the Leaning Tower, Baptisery Campailla, which is also called the "Falling Tower." Also very well known here are the Campo Santo cemetery, and the Duomo. But not only these buildings had made the city of Pisa famous. Be sure to also visit the church of Santa Maria della Spina, and St. Francesco dei Assisi, in addition there is also St. Frediano and, of course, San Paolo-a-Ripa-d'Amo and Santa -Katerina. It will be interesting to visit the beautiful gallery of Borgo Stretto and the Medici palace, a beautiful botanical garden with spectacular views and landscapes. Also very informative will be a visit to the Palazzo Reale, and after that - the Palazzo Lanfranchi and Palazzo Agostini.

We would like to separately mention the Piazza dei Cavalieri and palaces of Palazzo della Karovana and Palazzo Orolodzhio that are not far away from the tower. Near the square there are also two churches: one - Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, and the second one - St. Sixtus. In general, Pisa is especially famous for its beautiful buildings, palaces and churches, monuments of art and architecture, a variety of museums, as well as university complex that is one of the oldest universities in Europe.

In the summer months Pisa hosts two wonderful celebrations which are real spectacles. One of them is the Luminara festival. It celebrates the city's patron saint, the Holy Ranieri. On this day in the city all the lights are turned off ten thousand candles are lit up. The best view of this beauty sis from the bridge of Ponte di Mezzo. Next the celebrations continue with contests, performances and a concert, and in the end there are magical fireworks.

The second festival is held on the last Sunday of June. It’s called Giauque ice Ponte, which means "Games on the bridge." On this day the people of Pisa, who live on opposite sides of the river Arno, Tramontana and Metstsidzhorno, participate in a historical parade, and it all ends with a match on Ponte di Mezzo.

  • Pisa - sightseeing tour

For many, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is the main attraction of Italy. Do not miss the opportunity to see it firsthand!

    Подробнее

The standard sightseeing tour of Pisa includes visiting the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), which hosts three main Pisan attractions: the Cathedral, the Baptistery of San Giovanni (outside sightseeing only) and Her Majesty the Tower (outside view only, but you can climb up the tower on your own if you desire so). Construction of the cathedral - the first building on the Square of Miracles - was launched in 1063, and in 55 years the Cathedral was consecrated by the Pope. The facade and interior of the cathedral was modified several times after. Today, the cathedral walls are decorated with white and black marble, gilded ceilings and frescoes. Baptistery - the second building constructed on the Square of Miracles - a perfect example of mixed Romanesque and Gothic styles. Because of the two domes - pyramidal internal and external round one - the Baptistery has a very peculiar acoustics. Although it is unnoticeable to the eye, but the Baptistery, like the Tower, is "leaning". However, it is only the slope of 0.6 degrees. Finally, a few words about the Tower - the third element of the Square of Miracles. Leaning of the tower is caused by a soft soil. The tower began to lean in the construction period, which ended in 1360. The tower has 294 steps and is the bell tower of the Cathedral. Recent work on the restoration and strengthening of the Tower allowed reducing the angle of leaning and stabilizing it. But its characteristic slope is still there and continues to attract tourists wishing to be photographed against the backdrop of one of the symbols of Italy.
