The city of Turin (Torino) is the regional capital of the Piedmont region and it is located on the banks of the River Po (Pò). This is one of the most charming cities in Italy with a rich history. At one point here lived a settlement of taurines. In the first century AD taurines were captured by Romans, who by order of the Emperor Augustus built a new Roman city of Augusta Taurinorum. In the 15th century this land was annexed to the state of Savoie. In the 19th century, the architect Filippo Juvarra designed a city with huge buildings in the baroque style. In 1861, Turin became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. During this period, the first factory for manufacturing Fiat cars was established.
Today, Turin is a major industrial and cultural center of Italy. It is famous for its coffee factory Lavazza, chocolate Ferrero Rocher, production of vermouth Carpano and Martini, as well as sportswear Kappa.
Since 1997, all royal residences of the city as well as churches and many palaces in the Baroque style are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
At the heart of the historic center of Turin you can admire the amazing square Piazza Castello where you can find the most important buildings of the city, such as the Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) and Palazzo Madama.
Designed in 1584 by Ascanio Vitozzi, the square stretches for about 40,000 square meters. After some damage during the civil war of 1637-1640, the square was rebuilt by Maria Cristina di Francia. Currently, Palazzo Madama hosts the Museum of ancient art with valuable works of stone and wood, paintings and stained glass. Also on Piazza Castello you will find: Royal Theatre (Teatro Regio), Palazzo Reale from the 17th century, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist that holds the "Shroud of Turin", presumably used to wrap Jesus Christ after crucifixion. Here you will also find the ruins of the Roman gates and Roman amphitheater. The Royal Arsenal houses a very well-known in Europe collection of weapons.
Very interesting is the Palazzo Carignano. This is a historic building, which is one of the finest examples of the Baroque architecture. Here used to seat the first Italian Parliament. Today it houses the Museum of the Risorgimento (Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano) where you can admire many paintings, documents and weapons of the mid-20th century. On the banks of the river Po there is a magnificent Palace of Castello del Valentino. Currently it houses the faculty of architecture of the University.
The building of Mole Antonelliana is considered a symbol of the city of Turin, named in honor of the architect Alessandro Antonelli who conceived it. This building is 163.35 meters high and it is the tallest hand-laid building in the world. Today it houses the National Museum of Cinematography - one of the largest film museums which occupies 5 floors with a total area of 3200 square meters.
Among other world famous museums, we want to mention the Egyptian Museum (Museo Egizio), which is considered (by the value of the finds) the most important in the world after the Cairo Museum. The museum holds a rich collection of Egyptian antiquities. Nearby is the Savoy Gallery, which holds a superb collection of Dutch and Italian art of the 15th century.
